Sandy River

December 2, 2025

Sandy River Restoration, Lemon Stream

The Sandy River, within the Kennebec watershed, is designated as Critical Habitat for Atlantic salmon. Dozens of river miles within the Sandy watershed are among the most climate resilient habitat in Maine because the underlying geology of the sand and gravel aquifers keep water temperatures low. The heavily forested and rural character of the landscape also helps retain the cool temperatures, contributing to its habitat value and importance as a thermal refuge. Maine Rivers is working toward the removal of the Lemon Stream Dam in Starks, located within the Sandy River watershed, to improve aquatic connectivity and benefit restoration efforts. Work is anticipated to take place in 2026.
